Mother Daughter Dresses: DIY Liberty Lawn Summer Dresses

Mother Daughter Mothers Day Dresses made using Liberty Lawn fabric

Mother Daughter Mothers Day Dresses made using Liberty Lawn fabric

Hello Readers,

It is Mothering Sunday here in the UK. So if you are celebrating Mothers Day where you are, hope you have had/ are having or will have a wonderful day. Doctors told us that the chances of us having a child of our own were very slim, that IVF would not help us, and that we should consider adoption. So we consider ourselves to very blessed to have Kezia in our lives, conceived naturally, our very own miracle.

For the longest time Kezia has wanted to have a dress that matches mummy. I have been reluctant. But I decided that I would indulge her for Mothers Day. Let me tell you first about the fabric. About 20 minutes drive from my home there is a fabric printing company dating from 1835, called Stead McAlpin. You can read all about them here. Until very recently, Stead McAlpin have been responsible for printing fabrics for Liberty’s of London. When I heard that the printing for Liberty’s was being moved overseas I headed to Stead McAlpin to grab some of this famous cotton lawn before it all disappeared.

This is the first time I have sewn with this luscious light, silky fabric and it won’t be the last. My dress consists of overlays of the Liberty lawn, gathered and sewn on to interfaced underlining, and is also fully lined. Yet despite all these layers it is so soft, light and comfortable. This particular print, by the way, I believe is called Pela’s Roses.

I am going to be posting full details of both dresses later this week with full reviews and lots more pictures. I have to mention the weather at this point. It was freezing when we took these pictures earlier today. I mean, just the coldest biting wind. Totally not suitable for taking pictures of pretty summer dresses with bare legs. So lots of pictures of me looking…..windswept. I will leave you with a few more windswept pictures:

  1. Happy Mothers day, you both look delightful in your pretty matchy-matchy frocks! I’m devastated to hear that Liberty lawn is to be moved to overseas production. I have bought it from the mill shop at Standfast & Barrack in Lancaster, but had never heard of Stead & McAlpin. Thanks for the link – perhaps time to make an emergency dash North to stock up!

    • Thanks Fiona. I don’t know if liberty use other printing firms in the UK to print and if it’s just stead mcalpine printing which is being shifted abroad. Be warned there was not a huge selection of lawns left to chose from!

  2. Sewing with Tana Lawn is like stitching butter! I just love it. The draw back years ago was that is was only 90cm wide, but in recent years they have been making some prints wider. It never deterred me that I needed up to 6 metres to make a dress and I have saved most of the dresses over the years because the fabric is just so pretty and never seems to date, they don’s fit so well anymore! Enjoy your dress it looks fantastic and the color on you is stunning. Just love the swirl your daughter managed to achieve .. She also looks cold!!!

    • Thank you Janet. It is wonderful fabric. I bought 5 metres of this particular print to make these dresses. I think they were maybe 135cm wide? Yes these are dresses I won’t part with in a hurry.

  3. Such a gorgeous print – love it. Both dresses are beautiful. Hope that you had a lively Mother’s Day. I love the Liberty prints, but last time i was in Melbourne, i saw them priced at $50.00 per metre – and there they stayed!! First day of Autumn for us tomorrow and am starting to wonder when the weather will cool down as its forcast to be 31 degrees.

  5. i love this… i really hope i get a daughter one day so i can make mom and daughter outfits. i have a picture of me as a toddler and my mom wearing same fabric dresses made by my grandmother. I think creates a lovely memory

    • I hope you get a daughter some day to make your wishes come true 🙂 being honest it’s cute but also a little embarrassing when she wants to dress the same all the time! I keep telling myself she will stop by the time she is 10…
